DAIRY farmers in Victoria's western region have dominated the top 100 in The Weekly Times Countdown Downunder Milk Quality Awards.
Thirty-four farming operations named in the top 100 come from the state's west, followed by 17 from Gippsland, 13 from Tasmania and 13 from Western Australia.
The top 100 were chosen from the top 5 per cent of dairy farmers featured in The Weekly Times in the past few weeks who produced milk with the lowest bulk milk cell count.
Bulk milk cell counts are the concentration of white blood cells in vat milk on farms. They are a measure of milk quality and udder health.
Countdown Downunder project leader Pauline Brightling said many of the high performing suppliers had good day-to-day management and much of their success was due to attention to detail.
Dr Brightling said areas of particular importance were the milking routine, milking hygiene and machine maintenance.
She said the most common reason for milking machine problems was inadequate routine maintenance of mechanical components and rubberware.
Regular dairy and weekly checks were a simple way of finding and preventing problems.
``When more than one person milks in the shed, it is important to assign tasks to particular people and make them part of their regular responsibilities,'' she said.
Dr Brightling said having all staff on the farm working as a team, developing a system for the farm that detected problems early and contacting the right person at the right time when help was needed were also important.
