Introducing Countdown Mastitis Focus

Mastitis in your herd costs you money. Every case of clinical mastitis costs your farm at least $200. That’s
$1000 missed income for every five clinical cases! – money that could be spent on upgrading equipment, relief labour or even a holiday!

Now for the first time, Australian dairy farmers can obtain a comprehensive snapshot of mastitis control in their herds through a free Countdown Mastitis Focus report.

Its development is an initiative of Dairy Australia and the Herd Improvement Industry to assist farmers make better decisions about mastitis management in their herds. The report identifies problem areas and potential risks to udder health, and gives farmers and their advisers a way of tracking progress in the herd after changes are made.

Utilising farm records kept at your herd improvement organisation and on your farm PC, a Countdown Mastitis Focus report can now be generated for your farm.

About Countdown Mastitis Focus

In the past, it was difficult to recognise mastitis problems in herds until an outbreak occurred. But now the new Countdown Mastitis Focus report gives you the ability to effectively track the udder health of your herd.

The report enables you to assess key mastitis management areas and detect emerging problems. It provides information about the success of your previous drying-off strategy and clinical case management, as well as keeping tabs on the spread of infection through your herd and clinical cases at calving. You can then use the Countdown ‘triggers’ for action to help you decide what to do.

What records do I need?

The report uses routinely collected details, namely; clinical case and dry cow records, and the individual cow cell counts taken as part of milk recording.

The Countdown Mastitis Focus program uses standard industry DIF files; specifically a single .DIF file or a combination of file types that will have these extensions .101, .102, .103, .104, 107, .116

How do I get a report?

There are three main ways of obtaining a Countdown Mastitis Focus report:

  • From your herd improvement center
  • From your adviser
  • And soon you will be able to generate reports easily from several on-farm software packages.  Compatible packages will be listed as they as they become available

If you have the necessary DIF files you can visit www.mastitisfocus.com.au to generate a report now.
