Take extra care when milking fresh cows to minimise mastitis and maintain milk quality

One of the Countdown Farm Guidelines that leads to most discussion with farmers is the recommendation to “put cups on clean, dry teats”.

Farmers agree that this is ideal, but often query how practical or economic it is to dry teats after they have washed them. Many of you will have clients who are reluctant to consider extra routine preparation, but it is worthwhile encouraging them to re-assess this for FRESH cows.

During the first few days of each lactation, teats are tight and tender, often with poorer blood circulation and dry, dirty skin. They are particularly vulnerable to new infections. If there’s ever a time to provide extra TLC for teats, this is it.

The following grabs on this theme are available for you to use in your newsletters:

The grabs are also available in a Word file (without photos - so you will need to use the links above to access the photos).
