Using Bulk Milk Cell Counts to your advantage

Key Messages

  • Cells in milk rise as part of the inflammatory response to bacterial infection of the udder
  • Bulk Milk Cell Counts give immediate feedback about herd levels of mastitis
  • Thumb-rule: each 100,000 of BMCC indicates an additional 10% infected cows
  • Feedback is only useful if it is seen and acted upon
  • Low BMCCs give farmers premium milk payments and better milk yields
  • Milk quality at the farm gate is the basis of final product quality
  • BMCCs are part of the buying standards within Australia and internationally
